The Stranger (wips and done)

the_stranger_doneHis chat handle is The Stranger. For the last three months, he’s been messaging Loca Mocha, Lethal Lemon, and Nimble Melon, helping them find secure data connections and private places to meet. They’ve never met him, but Loca Mocha is about to come close. But is he just a sophisticated Org agent? (Is he even human?)

This piece (which I started Sunday and worked on for most of the day, before finishing it off Monday night after work) began as I looked through some of my older art, namely these two pieces from 10 years ago.

I thought, wouldn’t it be cool to paint Loca Mocha with her motorcycle in Gigapolis? I had a bunch of ideas in my head, but this is the one that started to get traction:

Redrew her upper body, I like this one a lot better:the_stranger_wip02

Rough sense of lighting:the_stranger_wip03

Clearly, I still do not know what to do with the right side of the painting.

Oh I know, a big line of cars!the_stranger_wip05 the_stranger_wip06

Okay, bigger cars maybe?the_stranger_wip07 the_stranger_wip08

This is where I left it off before going to bed (and to work on Monday), only to come home with a great idea – Twisted Gizmo totally needs to be in this one. I added a new layer on top and just started painting out the cars and painting him in, and that was it!

This was a fun piece. What really gets me about it though is that I spent about 7 hours on it total, which is probably half (or a third) of what I spent making this (hot mess of a) painting of Gigapolis in 2005. Back when I made it, I thought tiny details were what mattered, and had virtually no understanding of lighting… or anything, really.

Now, of course, I know you can “do more with less” (chunky brush strokes, loose forms) as long as you get the fundamentals (perspective, lighting, etc) correct – but it’s much easier said than done!

Onwards!

Lethal Lemon Car Crew (wips and completed art)

Lethal Lemon and friends are back! And they got a sweet ride.

Here’s the drawing I made during a sketch session and liked well enough to keep going with:sweet_lemon_ride_wip01

Here’s an early palette test (palette found on the web – thanks anonymous palette maker):sweet_lemon_ride_wip02

Some more rendering here. Man, it’s just a mess at this point. This is always the worst part of a painting for me, where it’s so messy but I just have to focus on its potential and push on through. sweet_lemon_ride_wip03

Okay, now it’s looking like something decent. This is usually where I decide to either scrap it or keep it, and this one’s gonna be a keeper.sweet_lemon_ride_wip04

More rendering. Saved Lethal Lemon’s feet for last (bad idea, ugh).sweet_lemon_ride_wip05

And.. done!

I could nitpick details forever but I just want to move on at this point. I’m really happy with it, and it’s been forever since I last drew these guys!

Here’s a closeup, which in many ways I like better than the full piece (lol).

ll_car_crewThis amazing masterpiece brought to you by Photoshop CS5, a Wacom tablet, and probably 10 hours of my time over the last few days.

Friday sketch: Twisted Gizmo and Nimble Melon team up

Lethal Lemon’s arch nemesis Twisted Gizmo teams up with her BFF, Nimble Melon, against an unseen foe! What threat could bring this unlikely pair together?! (Uh, your guess is as good as mine, I haven’t written it yet. But I do know that Twisted Gizmo and Nimble Melon share more than just their preference for neckties with everything.)

This started as a warm-up sketch since it’s been nearly two weeks (!!) since I last picked up my tablet pen. Even though my daydreams often ponder various Lethal Lemon storylines and scenarios, I haven’t actually drawn anything from that universe in FOREVER (and that should change, seriously).  Which is too bad, because now Twisted Gizmo looks more like a Machine Man expy than the more Terminator-on-steroids original creation I thought he was back in ’05. 😀

Oh well, it was a fun 2 hours either way!
